Martensitic Stainless Steel Pipes: Properties and Industrial Applications
Mar 17, 2026
Introduction
Martensitic stainless steel pipes are known for their high strength, hardness, and moderate corrosion resistance. Unlike austenitic stainless steels, martensitic grades can be heat treated to enhance mechanical properties, making them ideal for industrial piping, tooling, and energy applications.
The ASTM A182 and A213 standards define common martensitic grades, including 410, 420, and 431, with tensile strengths ranging from 600 to 900 MPa.
Material Properties
Chromium content: 12–18%
Carbon content: 0.08–0.15% for standard grades, up to 0.25% for high-hardness applications
Mechanical properties: Yield strength 450–600 MPa, tensile strength 600–900 MPa
Heat treatment: Quenching and tempering allow fine-tuning of hardness and toughness
